Nikon wireless tethering setup guide

This article describes how to connect a Nikon camera to Capture One wirelessly for tethered shooting. Follow the steps below in order to configure the respective camera and establish the connection.

Before getting started, please refer to the user manual to be clear on terminology and camera menus.

Nikon Z8

1. On the camera, open the Network Menu (the globe icon).
   
   
2. Select Connect to computer and confirm the option is set to On.
3. Go to Network Settings and set the connection type to Camera Control.
   
4. Select Create Profile. Enter any name for the profile.
5. When prompted to connect to a network, make sure the camera and your computer are on the same Wi-Fi network and select it.
   
6. If the camera asks about using a Nikon wireless transmitter, dismiss the prompt and continue with the standard connection process.
7. Once the camera is connected to the network, open Capture One on your computer.
8. In the Tethering section, open the camera dropdown list and select Nikon Z8.
9. The camera should connect and be ready for wireless tethering.

Nikon Z9

1. Press Menu on the camera body
    
2. Navigate to Network Menu > Connect to computer
   
    
3. Make sure that the Connection type setting is set to Camera control
   
    
4. Navigate to Network settings
    
5. Choose Create profile and go through the steps to establish a Wi-Fi connection, either through an access point (“search for wi-fi network”) or through the camera’s wifi (“direct connection to computer”) according to the camera’s manual.
    
6. For the search for wifi option, the camera will display the SSIDs of available networks. Choose one, enter password, the camera will be assigned an IP address from the access point.
    
7. For the direct connection from computer, the camera will create its own network, connect to this network from the Mac or PC that is running Capture One Pro.
    
8. The camera will prompt you to open Nikon’s Wireless Transmitter Utility (WTU), in order to pair. Instead, open Capture One Pro and choose the camera from the dropdown list in the Camera tool. This will complete the pairing process.
   
   N.B. Refrain from opening Wireless Transmitter Utility during this process, as it will block the connection to Capture One.
   
   
   (the camera will of course be a Nikon Z9 in this instance)
    
9. Once pairing is complete, the camera will have created a profile representing the connection between the camera and the specific Mac or PC that it has been paired to.
    
10. You will be returned to the “Connect to computer” menu, and you will see that the camera is re-connecting to the network. Once it has, the message “connecting to computer” will appear. This means that the camera can now be chosen from Capture One.

For IP-based tethering using an Ethernet cable

1. Connect the camera to a router or directly to a computer. The latter may be unstable, due to the length of ethernet cables and the type of data being transferred
2. Follow the steps 1-5 from instructions above and create a profile for the wired connection
   
   The detailed steps are as follows:
   Menu > Network Menu > Wired LAN = ON > Connect to Computer = ON > Network settings > Create profile > Enter a name > Obtain automatically (or manual, if you have the relevant IT knowledge) > IP address configuration complete > OK > "Pairing computer and camera. Start the Wireless Transmitter Utility (Capture One Pro) on the computer and select the camera" 
    
3. Select the camera from the dropdown menu in the Camera tool 

Nikon D6

The process is almost identical, with a small difference in the pairing menu. Please follow the steps in the user manual for this camera.

The important thing to remember is to replace any mention of 'Wireless transfer utility (WTU)' with 'Capture One' - they both achieve the same thing, as Capture One acts as a proxy for WTU.

N.B. D6 only supports wireless tethering when using the WT-6 accessory.

Troubleshooting for Windows users:

In case of the camera not displaying in Capture One

1. Check Bonjour service
   Bonjour is a prerequisite. Go to services and make sure there is a service called Bonjour service and it’s enabled.
2. Check Firewall settings
   Go to “Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security” > “Inbound Rules” and check that Bonjour service is there and allowed.
3. Discoverability
   Make your computer discoverable to the network. Go to “File explorer”, chose Networks from the left side panel and enable network sharing from the yellow prompt at the top of the window. If you don’t see the yellow prompt, it is already enabled.
4. Turn off IPv6 and/or restart the network adapter
   Go to Network connections, right click on the wifi, chose properties, uncheck the “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)” and restart the wifi adapter.
