Variants are a good way to make copies of an image, without taking up disk space. With the ability to split variants from the Primary Variant, this allows images of different looks and styles to be separated from the original image files and gives you the security of knowing which images are being exported, and eventually shared with others.
This feature is available in Capture One Pro 23 16.0 and later.
How to separate variants
- Navigate to a collection of images in either a Catalog or Session
- Select an image as your primary variant (presented with a thick white frame around the image in the Browser)
- Right/Option-click in the Viewer or Browser and select New Variant
- Drag one of the variants into an existing album and notice only the 'numbered' variant moves, and not the Primary Variant
Notes
- Creating variants from within a smart album is not recommended, as the variant will not meet the relevant criteria for the smart album by default
- Multiple variants can be added to albums by selecting multiple variants using Ctrl/Command + Click and then moving the images across to the desired album, as shown above
- Packing an image as EIP will include all variants in the resulting file, regardless of their virtual location
