Metadata can be very useful when organizing photos or simply to brand images with some indications of the image type or photo creator. You can also set up your own metadata stamps (e.g. copyright, client profiles) and apply these to multiple images. It is also possible to create your own Metadata Presets (a collection of values).
Add metadata by inserting keywords in the Metadata tab. Alternatively, add metadata to images by applying a Style or a Preset. Metadata Presets can be applied as a Style containing a number of presets or as one preset containing metadata from one metadata category.
The Metadata tool enables you to view camera (EXIF) data and add certain IPTC data to your images, prior to output. This metadata can be also embedded in the output file (e.g. JPG) if needed. You can change the basic metadata such as the filename, rating, caption, and copyright. You can also set IPTC data, including Description, Headline, Caption, Copyright information, when importing photos. This saves time when you need to process a batch of photos or produce a Web Contact Sheet. In some cases, you might want to strip metadata from an output file and this can easily be achieved by creating a Process recipe.
Capture One 16.5.6 respects crop and orientation settings stored in XMP from other software. Resetting crop or rotation in Capture One will revert to the values set in the external software, not the full-size, unrotated image.
Copy metadata to multiple images
You can quickly copy metadata, like IPTC or keywords, from one image to multiple images using the Metadata tool:
- Select all images you want to apply metadata to, including the source image that already contains the metadata.
- Make sure the source image is the primary selection by clicking on it (it should be the first image selected – notice the thick grey border around it in the Browser).
Hold down Shift and click the double‑arrow icon next to the Metadata tool.
- The IPTC metadata from the source image is copied to all other selected images.
If you want to control which metadata fields are copied, click the double‑arrow icon without holding Shift, uncheck the fields you do not want to include in the Adjustments Clipboard pop‑up, and click Apply.

Even some outdated IPTC fields like "Category" and "Supplemental Category" are supported which I use for some personal infos. Plus some Getty Images special fields – I would prefer the field below…
Unfortunately some newer schemas aren't supported like "Location Shown in the Image", "Artwork", "Model" know from Lightroom, Photoshop and Photo Mechanic. I hope these will included some day.
