I suggest you look at the preview cache size. For the iMac 5K I suggest to use the highest value of 5120px. Next, select all images and regenerate the previews (from the File menu).

Start Image Capture from Applications. In its preferences, select NO APPLICATION when camera is selected.(you're right, it is not to be configured from within CO 4).
